Can't agree with your partner on the style or features of your bathroom? Solve the problem with separate bathrooms designed with each of you in mind. His-and-hers bathrooms created by designer Penny Christie are a study in opposites: hers is flower-filled, cozy and warm; his is large, dark and grand.

Roses fill the purely feminine bathroom designed for the lady of the house. Rose wallpaper covers the walls and ceiling, with large-scale roses on the walls and a smaller pattern on the ceiling. A rose needlepoint rug fronts a Jacuzzi whirlpool bath, and an antique oil painting of roses in a gilt frame hangs over the tub. White-shuttered windows crisply contrast with the rose-covered walls and provide privacy and light control without a lot of fabric.

A well-lit vanity and sink area is surrounded by all-white ceiling-high cabinets that provide lots of storage (figure A).

Personal touches -- a framed christening gown and miniature chests from the owner's collection -- are important accents in a space as intimate as a bathroom (figure B).

His bathroom has a decidedly different look, with 15' ceilings, heavy beams, bold metal lighting fixtures and tile floors. Deep, rich colors carry the masculine theme, with dark tile on the walls and floor, dark paisley wallpaper and dark-stained wood shutters at the window.

A huge steam shower takes the place of a tub. A large sink fitted with pretty French hardware is sunk into an impressive wooden vanity custom-made to look like an old French piece.

A large shelved towel rack is hung with monogrammed towels. Personal collections and family photos add decorative accents to the shelved unit (figure C).
