To continue to detract from the high ceilings of the foyer, Golden plans to add two wooden columns, one to either side of the doorway. Available in all shapes and sizes, columns add a classy and elegant touch. When they're combined with the trompe l'oeil wall, the focus is kept in the room as opposed to traveling upward to the high ceiling.

Note: At this point in the project, it would be a good idea to have an extra set of hands.

    1. Drop a plumb line to mark the center point of the column, and mark the point with a permanent marker.

    2. Measure for the height of the column from the floor to the ledge (figure A ).

    3. Measure the capital, base and 1/4" plywood cap (figure B); subtract that number from the measurement made on the column.

    4. Cut the column to the exact measurements previously calculated (figure C).

    5. Attach the capital and base to the column with wood screws (figure D).

    6. The base cap is 10" square. Measure 5" on each side of the original mark and mark with a permanent marker (figure E).

    7. Slide the column into place, using the marks on the floor as a guide. The column should fit snugly once in place.

    8. Add the plywood cap and secure the column with wood screws.

    9. Repeat the process for the second column.

Note: Make sure to fix scratches and do touch-ups to the painted walls as necessary.
