Turn traditional furniture into office storage space. DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden shows how an antique wooden trunk can do double-duty, serving as both an attractive accessory and a file cabinet. Almost any antique trunk or wooden box can be used to store office files. In order to outfit a trunk with a metal hanging-file unit, it must have an interior width of at least 14". First, clean the piece well with wood cleaner. Freshen if necessary by opening it to the sun and air for a day or two. Assemble a metal hanging-file unit, available at office and discount stores, to the length you need (figure A). Drop it into the trunk, and add colorful hanging file folders.
