A little paint and molding can completely transform your boring kitchen-cabinet doors.

Nancy Golden, host of DIY's Decorating and Design, shows how to create decorative panels on your kitchen-cabinet doors.

    Materials:

cabinet doors with recessed center panels
    masking tape
    sandpaper
    tack cloth
    primer
oil-based paint (Nancy used a creamy shade, a slightly darker shade and a mauve for the trim)
    paintbrush
    paper towels
    miter box and saw
    rope molding
    finishing nails and hammer

    1. Remove doors from the cabinets.

    2. Tape off center panel, around which you will be painting.

    3. Sand the center panel and wipe with a tack cloth to remove any dust.

    4. Apply a smooth coat of primer and let dry.

    5. Paint the panel with the lightest shade. Let dry.

    6. Using the second-lightest shade, dip a brush into the paint, dab most of it off onto paper toweling, and lightly dry-brush the painted area.

    7. Cut rope molding to fit inside the panels, using a miter box to miter the corners.

    8. Paint the molding with the darkest color.

    9. Attach the molding with finishing nails just inside the panels. Finish with your choice of decorative cabinet hardware.
