Q: I need a good idea for decorating my plain stock cabinetry. Can you decoupage wood cabinet doors?

A: (Nate Berkus, Ask DIY Decorating & Design Expert) Yes, you can decoupage wood cabinet doors and it's easy and fun. Here's how:

    1. Remove the doors and drawers from the cabinet.

    2. Prime the fronts of the doors and drawers.

    3. Paint over the primer with a contrasting color in rich hues, such as periwinkle blue.

    4. Pick any kind of image you'd like to decoupage the cabinet front. Search flea markets for vintage postcards, seed packets, old photographs . . . you name it. But it's important to make a color copy of the image, not use the original. That way the cabinet surface will be completely smooth when you're done. With a copy, you can also enlarge or reduce your image to suit your purpose.

    5. Cut the color copied images to suit your design. Take some time and lay out a pattern that appeals to you on the cabinet fronts. Then remove the images.

    6. Use a foam brush to apply a lavish layer of decoupage medium such as Mod Podge to the painted cabinet fronts.

    7. Arrange your images on top of the Mod Podge and then apply another coat over top of the image and the surface (figure A). Don't worry, the glue dries clear!

    8. Wait two days for the decoupage medium to dry. Then seal it with varnish.

    More Questions for Nate:

Q: What are some creative ways besides pictures to transition from my family room to the kitchen? I have two harmonious colors in each room.

A: Find fabrics that incorporate both harmonious colors and use them in both rooms.

Q: I love antiques and have a hard time sticking to one style or period. Can you give me any suggestions for mixing objects from different eras?

A: Make sure that all the antiques you mix are of the same quality and they'll look great.

Q: What is the proper amount of space to have between the back of my dining room chairs and the buffet?

A: Three feet is the bare minimum.
