This armoire front, made to fit into a wall, disguises a bar. Reproduction antiques may be custom made to hide televisions and entire entertainment centers.

Artist Michael Stallings and expert carver Raymond Huyge create beautiful antique-furniture reproductions in their Dallas studio. Collecting antique furniture is a popular way to furnish a home, but finding that perfect piece can be difficult. Many designers are turning to craftspeople who design unique pieces of furniture that reproduce the look of antiques.

Reproduction antique furniture permits a client to own a fine-quality reproduction at a fraction of an original antique's cost -- or to copy an existing antique to complete a pair or expand a set. Michael and Raymond were able to expand a client's set of dining-room chairs to such perfection that the client couldn't distinguish between the originals and the reproductions.

One of the pieces they're most proud of is a mid-18th-century hand-carved chair. The French design was reproduced from a picture in an antiques catalog and cost far less than the $500,000 price of the original -- but the carving alone took three months.

Michael and Raymond's projects have included a pair of fantasy-design canopy beds for a young girl's room, a breakfast table with a carved-animal base, king-size beds and all manner of cabinets and armoires built to hide entertainment centers and bars.
