Cover a papier-mâché box with a black-and-white map for a sophisticated look. Cover a bunch of boxes, and stack them for effect.

Maps can be used to cover everything from furniture to papier-mache boxes. They're inexpensive and easy to find, and their large size makes them suitable for lots of projects. Perk up home furnishings and dress up accessories with neat ideas from Kitty Bartholomew, host of HGTV's Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home.

Maps may be used to decorate picture frames, boxes, tables and dressers -- you name it. Use them to add personality to nondescript or beat-up furniture or to dress up accessories.

A map-covered picture frame is an easy project and a good way to use smaller maps. Cut the map into strips, dip the strips in Mod Podge® glue and sealer, and smooth the pieces in place. When dry, seal with several coats of Mod Podge, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Give an old table a snappy new look by covering it with maps and highlighting the decorative details with paint. To create an aged look, dribble strong black coffee or tea on the map. For a sophisticated look, cover items with inexpensive black-and-white copies of color maps. Protect your finished map-covered treasures with several coats of Mod Podge or varnish.
