Sue Pelley of the Decorating Den offers suggestions for turning an everyday bedroom into an understated shabby-chic haven by combining neutral fabrics with dark, contrasting colors. - Use different types of fabric. Sue used four different fabrics in the demonstration bedroom, including cotton moiré and other soft blends.
- Use bullion fringe to add texture to bed skirts, table skirts, pillow shams and window treatments.
- Use neutral tones with dark accents. A dark print matted in black coordinates with a black lampshade on the nightstand.
- Combine materials. The bed frame Sue chose is made from a combination of wood and metal.
- Creatively change the look of traditional designs. The tab-top window dressing is not as full as most custom window treatments and is edged with fringe and coordinating tassel tiebacks. Cording wrapped around the top of the rod adds an expensive look.
- Add texture. Sue chose a variation of the '70s favorite, a cream-colored wool-shag area rug.
