Pat Clemens, former editor of Woman's Day Weekend Decorating Projects, transforms unpainted wood into a finished "antique" in just a few hours. Materials:
Unpainted wood furniture Wall coverings and borders Black acrylic paint Green acrylic paint Wall-covering paste Craft knife Several paintbrushes, foam or bristle Polyurethane sealer 120-grit sandpaper Tack cloth Pencil Ruler Adhesive tape Clean rags Tray of water - Sand the wood surface smooth, and wipe clean with a tack cloth.
- Apply black acrylic paint to the piece, and let dry.
- Brush a coat of green paint on a section of the surface, and immediately wipe off the excess with a damp rag, allowing the black undercoat to show through. This will give the surface a soft, worn look. Let the paint dry overnight.
- Roughly cut motifs from wall covering, and tape them on the piece, repositioning them until you find a placement you like (figure A).
- Use a craft knife to finely cut the wallpaper motifs.
- Brush wall-covering adhesive on the back of the first cutout design, remove the positioning piece, and set the design in place. Use a damp rag to remove the excess adhesive and smooth out any bubbles (figure B).
- Continue sticking wallpaper pieces to the cabinet in the same manner. To create a mitered corner on border pieces, overlap the pieces at the corner, and cut diagonally through both pieces (figure C). Remove the excess paper.
- When you've applied all the wallpaper cutouts, finish the piece with two coats of polyurethane, allowing it to dry between coats.
