Cleaning Under the Hood of Your Car - Before you work under the hood of the car, you need to lay newspapers down. Overlap them like you do shingles (figure A). This is for water or solid materials that will come down. You can just throw the newspapers away when you're finished -- and you won't have a mess on the driveway.
- Spray down the sides and front grill of the car before you do anything. That way if any battery acid is splashed it will protect the paint.
- To clean battery terminals, take some baking soda and mix it with water until you have the consistency of a light batter. Just pour this on the battery terminals (figure B) and let it set in -- it will eat up the corrosion on the terminals. Some people use regular canned drinking soda to clean the terminals, but it's sticky. The Queen says the baking soda mix works much better.
- When you wash the engine compartment, pay particular attention to the drains on either side of the windshield. A lot of debris catches there (figure C), and if the drains plug up it will create a swimming pool within the car causing the car to rust. Pick the debris out and rinse the compartment off.
- Don't use a heavy direct spray of water anywhere near anything that has electrical connections.
- There are a variety of engine cleaners you can purchase. You just spray them on (figure D) and let them sit for a while according the instructions on the can. Then just rinse everything off.
- Some people use oven cleaner to clean the engine. There are a couple of negatives in using them -- the fumes and the fact that the directions say not to use them on a painted surface.
- After cleaning the engine, you need to take a ride in your car for approximately 20 minutes. As the engine temperature gets above 212 degrees, it will boil the water away, and we need some time frame of drying.
