    Tips:

    • If you have to solder a pipe in close quarters, protect nearby walls from heat damage by using temporary heat shields made of sheet metal.

    • The next time you need to smooth a lumpy caulk job, put it on ice. Running an ice cube over the fresh caulk will even out lumps and give the bead a pit-free surface.

    • The hardest part of faucet-washer replacement is finding the right parts. The next time you need to replace one, buy several extra washers and keep them attached to the shut-off valve under the faucet.

    • Prevention is the best medicine. Only nine percent of burglaries in the United States are ever solved, so it pays to make the extra effort to secure your home.

    • Have a plan! In case of an emergency that prevents access to your home, designate a safe family meeting place such as the home of a relative or close family friend.

    • Wheelchair ramps need to leave from a door that is at least 3-feet wide and be no steeper than 1-inch of rise for each foot of ramp. Landings should be at least 42 inches long to allow room for turning.
