Carefully thought-out advance planning is the key to having a beautifully landscaped yard. Here are a few suggestions. - Begin by making a list of the existing trees, shrubs and bed-plants in your yard. List the existing views and areas that you'll want to keep roughly as they are.
- Make a second list of the types of new plantings and areas you'd like to add. Examples might include sitting area, play area, deck or patio, a vegetable garden, perennial bed, rock garden, stone walkway, goldfish pond, etc. Consider future as well as current needs as you plan your landscape. Allow all the family members to make suggestions for areas that might be included.
- Combine the existing areas you want to keep and the additions you'd like to make by making a scale drawing of your lot. Draw out a schematic plan of your yard, indicating the location of the house and existing areas. Then draw in the new elements and label them to indicate the new areas you'd like to add.
- Once you've got a solid plan, you can work more effectively as you begin incorporating new plants and materials for your landscaping project.
