  • Finishing the Hat
  • Finishing the Hat
    From "Knitty Gritty"
    episode DKNG-110

    PHOTO

Use a yarn needle threaded with Hopalong Cassidy to gather the top stitches and sew the back seam.
With the body of the hat and the earflaps completed, all you have to do is sew up the hat seams, trim the flaps, knit the bill and put all the pieces together. Then, in the final segment, you'll learn how to make the matching booties.

Knitty Gritty Tip: Many teachers are beginning to incorporate knitting into their curricula because it encourages analytical thinking. While strengthening hand-eye coordination, knitting teaches patience and reading skills and helps students stay focused on a task.

    Finishing
Take earflap and with Plush, pick up 14 sts (approximately 1 st for every 2 rows) along side (figure B). Work 1 row of knit then bind off in knit. Repeat on other side of earflap. Make sure that the side stitches are tacked down to the strap. You may have to do this with a little extra yarn. Sew earflaps, under the plush trim, to the hat so that they are 4-1/4" apart in the front. Sew front bill in place in the center between the earflaps.
