Here's a fiber that doesn't deserve its bum rap. Despite its long history as a viable alternative to cotton for clothes and trees for paper, hemp is designated a Schedule 1 drug under the United States Controlled Substances Act. Unlike its notorious cousin, however, industrial hemp contains too few psychoactive ingredients to be used as a hallucinogen. The U.S. is the only developed country that prohibits the growing of hemp as an agricultural crop.
