  • Devil Hat
  • Show your naughty side with this devilish horned hat.
    From "Knitty Gritty"
    episode DKNG-706

Jennifer Stafford, a knitwear designer and the author of DomiKNITrix, knits a devil hood, starting at the tip of the widow's peak. She uses a raised increase technique, both right and left leaning, to keep everything symmetrical. This increase also keeps the knitting tight. Stitches are then broken into three groups to separate the edge stitches from the widow's peak. After finding the center of the hat, she marks it and picks up stitches to start the gusset, increasing as she goes.

    Materials:

two balls of Lamb's Pride Bulky Superwash #SW81 (Red Baron), or color of your choice
circular knitting needle, at least 24" (60cm) long, US size 9 (5.5mm), or size needed to attain gauge
double-point needles (dpn), US size 9 (5.5mm) (for horns)
    short, flexible stitch holders
    crochet hook
    darning needle
small amount of 1"-thick batting (for stuffing horns, cut to shape)
    2 stitch markers

    Yarn tips:

    • If you're substituting yarn, bulky weight is recommended.

    • If you wish to make the horns in a contrasting color, each requires 9 yards.

Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4" (10cm) (gauge is intentionally tight for this yarn)

Sizes: Sizes are given as Small (Medium, Large). If no size is indicated, the instructions are consistent across all sizes.

Sizing note: Small fits up to 21" (53.5cm), Medium up to 22-1/2"(57cm), Large up to 23-1/2" (59.5cm).

    Construction Steps

    1. Knit a shaped strip from the point of the widow's peak to the back of the head.

    2. Pick up stitches at the top of the crown and knit the curved gusset on each side to complete the hat.

    3. Knit the sides and nape of the hat.
