Ribbon expert and designer Wendy Grande explains how to stitch a woven basket. Materials:
Fabric Crewel or tapestry needle 4 mm silk-ribbon strips in two shades of light brown or tan Pigma pen or fine-tip permanent marker Straight pins - Draw three sets of lines about 1/4" apart on your fabric. Mark small dots on the basket bottom and top where the ribs (vertical supports of the basket) will connect. The top and bottom number of ribs must match, and there must be an odd number.
- Cut two shades of light brown or tan 4 mm silk ribbon, and thread them through the needle together. Bring the needle up from the back at the base of the basket. Roll the needle with your thumb and forefinger until the ribbon starts to twist back on itself. Connect with the dot at the top of the basket, and draw the needle from the front to the back. Gently pull the rib into position, and if the basket is curved, pin into place. Stitch this down later. Bring the needle up from the top of the basket, and connect with the dot at the bottom of the basket. Continue until all of the ribs are in place (figure A).
- Determine the placement of the weavers (horizontal elements of the basket). Bring your needle through the ribs to the opposite side of the basket. Push the needle to the back side, just under the last rib. On the next weaver, bring the needle up just to the outside of the right-most rib, and weave your needle through the ribs to the opposite side of the basket. Continue this process with as many weavers as you like. You may want to add accent colors of silk strips to the weavers (figure B).
- To make the basket top and handle, start in the lower left corner of the base of the basket. Bring the needle up on the bottom line and back down on the top line approximately three generous needle widths apart. Continue this process from left to right. At the right-most corner, fill in with smaller stitches, and reverse directions from right to left (figure C). The last row will be from left to right and will fill in the open areas. Check the placement of the ribs to make sure they are straight (figure D).
Tip: - You may want to add silk roses, violets or other floral designs to the basket.
