This Aztec motif was the winner of an American Kite Flying Association Grand Champion Award in 1992.

Jose Sainz was interested in kite flying as a child but left the hobby for many years. After returning to it as an adult, Sainz began designing and crafting his own award-winning kites. As a child, Sainz crafted his kites from paper and sticks, but now he creates intricate handmade -- and aerodynamic -- works of beauty.

While he doesn't know immediately whether a design will work, Sainz tries to modify tested shapes to create new designs. Strips of nylon are cut and a soldering gun is used to fuse the pieces together before they're sewn.

Sainz -- who explains that kite flying is a spiritual practice among many cultures and tribes -- says the hobby gives him a sense of freedom.
