Imagine turning scraps of wallpaper into a beautiful abstract picture. Crafter Mimi Keezee uses quilting designs and wallpaper cut into geometric shapes to make a masterpiece.

    Materials:

    Wallpaper, prepasted
Optional: rubber cement (if using unpasted wallpaper)
    Water
    Sponge
    See-through ruler
    Plastic see-through right triangle
    Cutting mat
    Utility or craft knife
    Poster board or artist board
    Design from a quilting book

    1. Select a design made up of geometric shapes such as squares, triangles, diamonds, etc., from a quilting book. If you don't have any quilting books on hand, check your local library (figure A).

    2. Rulers are important for this project because of the precise cuts that are required. It's best to use a see-through ruler or a plastic quilter's ruler that has lines at close intervals. Using the pattern as a guide, measure and cut the geometric shapes required for the design out of the wallpaper, using a craft or utility knife on a cutting mat (figure B).

    3. If using prepasted wallpaper, wet the back of the paper pieces by pressing them onto a wet sponge. Place them on poster board in the desired design (figure C). If the paper isn't prepasted, glue the pieces to the poster board with rubber cement (figure D).

    4. Cut narrow strips for a border around the design, if desired (figure E).

    Tips:

    • For a dramatic effect, select different types of wallpapers that have contrasting colors.

    • Avoid large floral wallpaper designs.
