A little extra paint was used to decorate this cake and create a look of authenticity. The guest of honor might not be able to distinguish it from the real thing!

Gift guru Eleanor Leinen dresses up table settings with this festive place-card holder design. Leinen says not to worry about perfection – exaggerated effects and a jazzy presentation only add to the celebratory mood!

    Materials:

    Small plastic foam cylinders
Glue gun with high and low settings
    Glue sticks
    Thin curling ribbon
    Faux paper pull snow
    Pleated paper strips
    Opalescent spray paint
    Tiny fake berries
    Thick- and fine-point gold markers
    Small (demitasse-size) saucers
    Plastic forks
    Gold spray paint
    Spray-mount adhesive

    1. Begin by spraying the sides and top of foam cylinder with spray adhesive. Cover quickly with pleated paper strips (figure A).

    2. Once the form is covered with strips, lightly spray surface with opalescent white paint. Trim errant paper strips as needed (figure B).

    3. Wrap ribbon around the form's diameter. Adhere the ribbon to the center with a line of hot glue (figure C). If desired, surround the ribbon with additional paint to create the look of filling (it should begin to look like a small petit four).

    4. Top "cake" with tiny dabs of pull snow and berries. Adhere the toppings with hot glue.

    5. To create the base, hot-glue cake into the center of a small plate or saucer. If extra space remains on the plate, arrange and glue wrapped hard candies around the cake.

    6. Spray a plastic fork with gold and stick the base gently into top of cake.

    7. Finish by writing the guest's name on a card in gold ink and insert the card between the prongs of the fork.
