Origami is the ancient art of Japanese paper folding. Artist Barbara Ortiz explains that any type of paper will work for origami, but she says many craft stores offer kits with detailed instructions as well as a variety of papers and project ideas. As skills and techniques are developed, more complex projects can be completed. Here, Ortiz demonstrates an easy beginner project: a simple origami house. Origami House Materials: Origami or construction paper - Working on a flat surface, fold paper from side to side, connecting the corners, creating a book fold (figure A ).
- Leave the paper folded and turn it so the opening of the fold is facing inward.
- Make another book fold by connecting the sides.
- Open book fold. Take one edge and fold it to the middle fold (figure B).
- Repeat on the other side.
- Open the sides to stand up.
- While holding down the middle of the paper, pull the top fold down to touch the inside fold (figure C). Repeat step for other side.
