    episode ADI-408

Scissors come in a greater variety than you might imagine, and there are specialized scissors for specialized jobs. Veteran crafter Debbie Stapely offers these tips for selecting and caring for scissors used in crafting.

    • A good pair of scissors is critical for sewing and fabric-related crafting, but a dull pair of scissors is fairly useless in this application. Designate a pair of sewing scissors to be used specifically and solely for cutting fabric and sewing-related projects, and avoid using this particular pair to cut paper or other materials. It's also important to have a good pair of pinking shears for use with fabric.

    • Designate an all-purpose pair of scissors for general use, including cutting paper.

    • If your scissors become dull while you're in the middle of a project, a temporary fix is to use the scissors to cut through some sandpaper. The sandpaper surface will help remove burrs and partially sharpen the rough edge. Again, this is a temporary fix. For restoring a fine cutting edge to high-quality scissors, you'll need to have them sharpened. For ordinary all-purpose scissors, it may be easier and less expensive to simply replace them.

    • When cutting tin or other thin sheet metal, use a pair of tin-snips.
