Materials: Glass cleaner Glass plate (size is a matter of personal choice -- guest prefers 9" or 12" plates) Color copies of whatever images you choose to use (even if it's a black-and-white photo, a copy made from a color laser copier works best) Mod Podge (TM) -- or any decoupage glue 1" foam brush Damp sponge or paper towel Paint (guest used regular acrylic paint) Gold-leaf sizing Gold, silver or copper composition gold leaf Varnish - Clean plate with glass cleaner.
- Cut images and decide how you want them placed on the plate. Remember that you are going to be gluing them to the underside of the plate facing out.
- Once you have a design you're happy with, you can begin gluing. Be sure to use enough glue -- but not too much! (It's better. however, to err on the side of too much (figure A) as opposed to not enough when it comes to glue.
- Push the glue on the plate using the foam brush. Depending on the size of the image, you may also put glue on the image. The larger it is, the more likely it is you'll need to put glue on the image.
- When it comes to placing the image, remember that you are working backward as you put it on the underside of the glass facing out.
- Once the image is on the plate, dip your finger in glue and rub the image, squeezing out the excess glue and removing any big bubbles. You must put the glue on your finger to help it slide across the image (figure B). If you try to do it with a dry finger, you risk tearing the image.
- As you glue, gently wipe any excess glue off the glass using the damp cloth or sponge. Be very careful, as it's easy to tear the image at this point -- it's wet from the glue.
- Keep doing this until all the images are down. Then wait until the glue dries.
- Apply the gold-leaf adhesive sizing wherever you want leaf to go.
- Apply the leaf (figure C -- check out all the different colors).
- Paint remaining surface.
- When paint is dry, apply varnish.
