If cleanup is the hardest part of your painting projects, these tips can help make things easier. Glue a plastic or paper plate to the bottom of your paint can to catch drips ( figure A). When you're finished, pry off the plate and throw it away. If you don't have time to clean the brush, place it in a self-closing bag and store it in the freezer until you can clean it properly. If latex paint has dried on your brush, soak it in vinegar to soften the dried paint. You can pour vinegar on paint spills to loosen them too. To keep brushes soft, soak them in fabric softener. When painting overhead, you can reduce spills and drips by cutting an X in a paper plate and sliding it over the paintbrush handle (figure B). Wrap masking tape around the hole in the plate to prevent paint from dripping onto your hand. Instead of wrapping masking tape around doorknobs, try smearing them with petroleum jelly to protect them from paint. Petroleum jelly may also be used on windows.
