    Exterior Paint and Ceilings

    Tips:

    • A thin film of baby powder applied to freshly dried paint will keep a magnetic weather strip from marring your new finish.

    • Instead of going through the trouble of scraping and stripping weathered wood shutters, consider flipping the exposed side of the shutters against the house and painting the backs.

    • Did you know? In countries where severe weather is tough on a home's finish, it's a common practice to paint one side of the house each year to stay ahead of damage without taking on too much at once.

    • Ceilings painted a lighter color than their surrounding walls appear higher. A darker color makes the ceiling appear lower but will do a better job of hiding imperfections.

    • You can add interest and contrast to a room with solid-colored walls by installing wallpaper on the ceiling.

    • Attach a drawer pull to a short, unused section of your crown molding and staple a piece of medium-grit sandpaper over the top edge. You'll make a custom sanding block that will knock down ceiling texture for a perfect crown molding fit.
