    Steps:

    1. Either paint the wood or choose an area of wood that has been previously painted. The painting doesn't need to be perfect, since it's going to be distressed.

    2. There are a couple different techniques that can be used to distress your wood. The first is to use a palm sander and dig into the grain of the wood. Use the edge of the sander to scrape into the wood.

    3. Another option is to lay the sander flat on the surface and hold it in place for different amounts of time, or slowly sweep it across the wood. Note: Use sandpaper to really give detail to your wood. Use it to scrape at your wood or smooth edges that are too rough.

    4. To seal the wood, simply follow the manufacturer's directions.
