In this episode of DIY's Radio Control Hobbies, host Chris Chianelli dispels the myth that it's expensive and requires hours of building to get into RC scale boats. Chris highlights some popular RC scale-model boats that come ready-to-run, right out of the box. The featured project is to mount a steam engine on the Elliot Bay Steam Launch® from Midwest Products®. Everything needed for this project comes in the kit and the boat can be built over a weekend. Later, Chris visits a scenic lake just outside Atlanta, Georgia where some members of the Southeastern Boat Modelers Club join in for a scale boat regatta.
The in-studio portion of the episode demonstrates how a steam engine works and how to assemble the steam engine in the boat.

Introduction to Scale-Model BoatsFor those new to the hobby, scale-model boats (figure A) emulate real, full-scale boats. Whether you're interested in ocean liners, battleships, sailboats, sailing ships or fishing boats, there's probably a scale-model that's right up your alley.
In this segment, in addition to the Elliot Bay Steam Launch, Chris highlights other popular scale boat models. Included are:
- Hobbico's Bristol Bay Trawler®
- Midwest Product's Down-East Lobster Boat®
- Midwest's PT-109®
- Vac-U-Boat®'s electric tug;
- Horizon Hobby's Fishing Trawler®.
- Our featured boat is the Elliot Bay Steam Launch (figure B). It costs around $120. For our project, we install a boiler and steam engine on this scale boat.
