  • RC Scale-Model Boats: Scratch-Built Replicas
  • From "Radio Control Hobbies"
    episode RCH-304

    PHOTO

This scale-model sailing ship was built from scratch and uses a 7-channel radio to control each sail independently.
In this episode of DIY's Radio Control Hobbies, host Chris Chianelli takes a trip to a state park near Atlanta, GA for a small-scale boat regatta sponsored by the local RC-boat club, Southeast Boat Modelers.

In this segment, Chris talks to some scale-model enthusiasts from a specialized branch of the hobby -- scratch-built replicas. These remarkably precise and accurate and working miniatures are built entirely by their owners, not from a kit.

    Scratch-Built Boat Replicas

Scratch-built replicas are designed and built entirely by the modeler, not made from a kit. Here are a few extraordinary examples from this highly advanced segment of the scale-model hobby.

    • The Hamilton Class Coast-Guard Cutter specializes in drug interdiction. The scale-model replica (figure A) features accurate reproductions of the latest updates to armaments, weaponry and even the helicopter on the deck helipad (figure B).

    • The USS Dallas, a Los Angeles Class "killer" submarine, is designed to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines. The scratch-built model (figure C) features a hull that was shaped out of foam with fiberglass laid over the top of it. The whole of this model sub free-floods with water except for the protected compartment that houses the electronics (figure D). Like an RC plane, it utilizes a rudder and elevator for guidance. An electronic motor controls the prop, and is regulated by electronic speed controllers.

    • Chris Gierszewski's scratch-built square-rigger sailing ship (figure E) is equipped with a 7-channel radio that controls and trims all of the ships sails and masts independently. It even has operational cannons that fires, complete with talcum-powder "smoke" (figure F).

    • Doug Smock's replica of a 1930 Flyer Class race boat (figures G and H) is built with a hull of mahogany. This boat from the 1930s-era (the full-sized version) could achieve open-water speeds of 45 mph.
