Chris Chianelli provides a primer on giant-scale RC vehicles.
|
|
In this episode of DIY's Radio Control Hobbies, host Chris Chianelli introduces giant-scale RC vehicles -- meaning models that are 8th-scale and larger. Vehicles featured include monster trucks, 4-wheel-drive buggies, on-road racers and even giant-scale gas-ignition powered dune buggies. In this first segment, Chris introduces several giant-scale models, including one that he will later perform a performance upgrade on -- the Kyosho® 1/8-scale 4WD buggy.
Giant Scale Primer- For those who live by the rule "bigger is better," giant-scale models may be the most exciting thing in RC hobbies. Eighth-scale models are considered "big scale," and anything larger than that is considered "giant scale." All the models featured in this episode are 8th-scale or larger (figure A). Examples of some of the giant-scale 4WD monster-trucks are the Tamiya Terra Crusher® and the Duratrax Thunder Quake®.
- Kyosho's Hummer® is built with full strut suspension and 3-speed transmission (figure B). It comes fully assembled and essentially ready to run.
The Skyline® on-road racer is offered in 1/7-scale, and features very smooth handling and a number of high performance features including dual-disc brakes, shaft drive, oil shocks and a 3.5 nitro engine (figure C).The Giant Buggy by Traxxas® is 1/6-scale (figure D), and so large that it uses a spark plug and gas-ignition engine much like those used in consumer leaf-blowers.

The Kyosho Inferno® 1/8-scale 4WD buggy (figure E) is highly regarded in the RC racing world, and comes assembled and ready to run. In the segment that follows, Chris performs power and brakes-tuning on the Kyosho buggy to enhance its racing performance.
