The finished Kyosho Seawind in close regatta competition with another yacht in its class.

    Mast and Rigging

In this segment, Chris Chianelli shows how to attach the mast and rigging to the Kyosho Seawind (TM), an RC racing yacht.

    Materials:

    Kyosho Seawind kit
    Scissors
    Cyanoacrylate glue

Important: This demonstration shows basic instructions for assembly and operation of this particular model of RC sailboat. There are variations in assembly for each particular model. Read and carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with your boat, whether it is this particular model or another. Additional information about assembly as well as running, troubleshooting and fine-tuning the model can be found in the manufacturer's instructions.

    • Close examination of the aluminum mast shows a track (figure A) that runs the entire length of the mast. The sail itself slides into this track where it is held securely in place.

    • The halyards and back-stay are tied off, and the halyard is threaded into the spreader.

    • The rigging material for the boat comes on a spool that's included in the kit. Also included are a number of tiny snap-rings (figure B) that are used to fasten the riggings to various connection points on the deck.

    • Tiny adjusting blocks (figure C) are also included, and are used to adjust the tautness of the riggings and hold the mast properly upright on the boat.

    • To fasten the mast (figure D) the base of the mast has a plastic tongue that fits into attaches to a small plate on the deck (figure E).

    • With the base of the mast attached to the mounting plate, fasten the rigging, including the back-stay (figure F) and mainstay -- to the connecting points on the deck following the manufacturer's instructions and diagrams.

    • Once all four points of the rigging are connected, adjust the tautness of the individual lines incrementally using the adjusting blocks (figure G).

    • As you gradually tighten each of the four lines, the mast comes into its proper upright position.

    • Once the lines have all been tightened to your satisfaction, close off the clasps on each of the snap-rings.

    • With the rigging completed, check the operation of the servo winch (figure H) in unison with the riggings and sails.

In the segment that follows, Chris gives some sailing and racing tips.
