The paper Natalie Williams has chosen for her scrapbook page features a border print of ducks (figure A), which gives her a idea for a whimsical treatment for the letters. Gathering up her supplies -- the duck cutouts, a grommet kit, a hammer and a self-healing mat, she gets to work.
- Placing the self-healing mat on a hard surface, she uses the hammer and the hole punch provided in the kit to tap a hole into a small piece of paper (figure B).
- She inserts an eyelet into the hole (figure C), making sure the finished side will be on the front of the paper. Thanks to the size of the punch, the hole is 1/32" larger than the eyelet, so it doesn't slide out during application.
- She turns the paper over and used the hammer and the other end of the punch to flatten the eyelid edges (figure D), then finishes the process with a few taps of the hammer.
- The paper with the eyelet is decorated with one of the cutout ducks, and a string is threaded through the eyelet.
- Williams repeats the eyelet process on one of the letters, then ties the first piece on with the string (figure E).
- Two more letters are treated the same way, then Williams attaches the letters to the top of the pages (figure F) -- and the twins' tub-time has been immortalized!
Debbie Stapely suggests some tools of the cropping trade. - A tiny craft knife with a swivel tip can be used to trim around small pictures. This is especially good if the background of your page is boring -- just cut around the picture and use it to liven up the page (figure G).
- You may also wish to invest in a wooden cutting board or a self-healing mat ( figure H), decorative-edged scissors (figure I), or any of a number of exciting innovations to make your scrapbook a winner!
