Sand: a natural element that can evoke memories from a special day and add texture to your page. Here, it's used on both letters and to frame photos.

Instead of sand, this same technique can be used with glitter-- as it was to enhance this "magical" summer page.

Designer Desiree Tanner has an ideal way to accent summer-themed pages -- use sand or glitter to capture the sparkle of sun, sand and sea!

    Materials:

    Summer photographs
Photocopied elements from photograph (to be used as background and die-cuts)
    Craft knife or scissors
    Scrapbooking/craft wire
    Glue
    Container of sand
    Hand-torn paper
    12" x 12" scrapbook page
    Tacky-tape
    Cardstock
    Die-cut machine
    Letter dies

    1. Begin by selecting a decorative element from the background of your summer photos. (In this example, Tanner selects the flowers that appear on the beach chair.) For efficiency, use a punch to create a similar shape, then alter as necessary (figure A).

    2. After punching shapes and altering, embellish as desired (Tanner adds craft wire to the center of her flower punch to emulate the look of a hibiscus).

    3. Create background paper by photocopying and enlarging pattern from the photo. Adhere to scrapbook page.

    4. Randomly adhere punched shapes and accents to background.

    5. Hand-tear paper (or buy pre-torn or deckle-edged paper in desired size) to create a mat for the photos.

    6. Apply glue to torn edges, then gently dip page into a container of sand (figure B). For best results, hold each side of the paper as flat as possible.

    7. All sand and glue to dry, then adhere photo to center of paper (figure C).

    8. Next, apply two strips of tacky tape to cardstock.

    9. Place letter die face down on tacky cardstock surface, slide into die cut machine and press handle (figure D).

    10. Remove tacky tape (which will leave adhesive residue on letters). Place letters in sand (figure E).

    11. Finally, adhere letters to page (figure F), assemble page elements and add embellishments as desired. (Tanner uses a heart die to create seagulls. She makes the cut using the die-cut machine, then moves the die 1/4" before making a second cut. The small top remnant has the appearance of the seagull flying through the air.)
