Although gold was chosen for this embossed design, choose the color and design that is most complementary to the selected heritage photographs.

One of the key reasons many scrapbookers undertake the hobby is a desire to preserve family history and share memories. What better way to complement vintage photos and documents than with embossed touches reminiscent of a bygone era? Here, artist Jennifer O'Byrne shares her heat-embossing technique.

    Materials:

    embossing templates
    gold embossing powder
    embossing pen
medium-dark colored cardstock or scrapbooking page
    heat tool
mat paper or cardstock in contrasting shade
    photograph
    acid-free adhesive
    scissors or craft knife

    1. First, place embossing template as desired over scrapbooking page or cardstock and use the embossing pen to fill the open template design (figure A). The embossing ink — which seems clear — will provide subtle contrast (and can be used without embossing powder to create a watermark effect).

    2. Next, add gold embossing powder over the inked area (figure B) and shake or tap excess powder away from the surface.

    3. Apply heat with heat gun or tool to set the embossed design (figure C).

    4. To complete the page, create a photo mat by cutting mat paper or cardstock with deckle-edge scissors. Then, use the pen to apply embossing ink to all decorative edges, then dip each edge in embossing powder (figure D).

    5. Finally, heat embossed edges to set powder, then adhere photo to the mat and add matted photograph to page (figure E).
