Many croppers don't think of wire and beads as embellishments for special baby pages. But, as designer Rebecca Ludens demonstrates, wire -- when combined with pastel beads -- actually adds a special combination of childlike whimsy and softness.

Click here for printable wire jig templates/patterns.

Instructions and template may be viewed by using

    Materials:

22-gauge powder blue wire (or other color as desired)
    Round nose pliers
    Nylon jaw pliers
    Jewelry/wire Jig
    Pastel seed beads
    Double-sided foam dimensional tape

    1. To create beaded wire words, first create loop using the round nose pliers on the end of a 9" piece of wire. Thread about a dozen beads on the wire.

    2. Begin creating the letters by hand with the wire, leaving seed beads on each letter as you progress.

    3. Finish the word with a loop to keep the beads on and then cut off any extra wire.

    4. To create a beaded border, first peg out border pattern on the Jewelry Jig using small size pegs.

    5. Create a loop using the round nose pliers on the end of a 18" piece of wire. Thread about 45 beads on the wire.

    6. Hand-wrap the wire around the pegs (figure A) leaving 2-4 beads on each length of wire between the pegs.

    7. When the wire reaches the end of the pegged pattern, carefully life off the pegs and place end where you left off at the top of the pattern. Continue down the length of wire until you reach the desired border length.

    8. Use this same technique to create a faux safety pin. Use the template provided to create a diaper. Create a safety pin by adding beads and looping ends. Add a few beads and bring the pin to a "U-shape" (figure B)

    9. A small pieces of paper to cover both ends of the wire to resemble the top of a diaper pin. Use a small piece of foam tape (figure C) to add dimension and adhere the embellishment to the page.
