Designer Melissa Inman demonstrates her technique for creating a special album that pays tribute to dear old dad.

    Materials:

    Kolo mini-album
    7 wallet-sized photos
    die-cut letters
    craft knife
    adhesive
    ruler
    pencil
    journaling pen
    two sheets of cardstock

    1. Starting at the back of the mini-album — on the very last page. Begin by measuring 1/2" from edge, and use pencil and ruler to lightly draw a line at the measurement (figure A).

    2. Then, on the next page, mark at the 1/2" and 1" intervals. Continue measuring and marking (adding a 1/2" from each previous guideline) throughout the book until all pages have been measured and marked with guides. To double-check your measurements , take a look at the first page of the album: lines should be positioned at 3" and 2-1/2" from the right edge.

    3. Once all guidelines have been drawn, begin adhering letters (figure B). Place the "R" at 1/2" inch guide on the last page, "E" at 1" guide on the next page, and so on. Stagger letters up from bottom (moving up 3/4" for each placement ), carefully checking placement on the previous page before adhering. Continue until all letters have been positioned and adhered. The final letter — "F" — placed on the first page, should be placed approximately 3" from the bottom.

    4. Once all letters have been adhered, use craft knife to cut away excess page around the letter. Cut along guideline first -- taking care to cut just up to the letter, but not through it (figure C). Then, cut around outer edge of letter . Repeat technique for all letters. Erase any errant pencil marks

    5. Next, begin mounting small photos on coordinating mats. Add clear plastic photo corners to edges of mat and mount to page (figure D).

    6. Finally, journal below each picture. Begin with pencil, then go over writing in ink. Erase any errant pencil marks.
