  • Quick Tip: Stripping Wire
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-305
    advertisement

Although stripping wire is a basic task required for most electrical projects, mastering the technique can be a challenge for those who don't work with wire on a regular basis.

But not to worry: As home-repair expert Brad Staggs shows here, stripping wire is basically just a simple trick that any do-it-yourselfer can take on with confidence. Just follow these easy steps:

    • First, be sure you have the right tool. Purchase a high-quality wire-stripping tool from your local hardware store; don't be tempted to use scissors or another similiar tool you think may work.

    • Place the length of wire between the serrated blades and clamp down just enough to create a cut through the plastic insulation around the exterior of the wire. Then loosen your grip slightly and simply slide the cutter off the end of the wire to remove the small piece of insulation.

    • To make a small hook on the end of the wire, insert the exposed length in the small hole in one of the blades, twist the tool downward and pull off the end of the wire. This will leave a small hooked end that can be easily attached to a terminal screw on an electrical outlet.

Final safety note: Remember to turn off the electricity at the breaker panel before beginning any type of electrical project.
