Hard-wired home security systems can be expensive, and they often include monthly monitoring fees. As an alternative, you can easily install a wireless security system yourself. Materials:
Micro screwdriver Drill, with drill bits and a Phillips driver bit Wire strippers Wireless home-security kit (main module, door and window sensors, motion sensors and a siren) - Determine an appropriate location for the main module that is near an outlet but away from any appliances or fixtures that could block the radio frequency of the unit (e.g., radios, televisions, microwave ovens or large metal objects).
- Program the module before affixing it to the wall.
- Position the mounting bracket for the door sensor on the entry doorframe, and mark the drill holes (figure A).
- Drill pilot holes, and mount the bracket with screws.
- Set the sensor to "delay," and attach it to the bracket (figure B).
- Remove the cover from the magnet, and screw it into position on the door so that it is next to the sensor. Many sensors have an LED indicator to show whether the magnet is positioned properly. When the magnet is in position, replace the cover.
- Install the window sensor to the wall in the same manner as the door sensor.
- Attach the glass-break detector to the window glass (figure C). Cut the wire from the detector to the appropriate length to reach the sensor, and strip about 1/2" of insulation from the end of the wire.
- Remove the sensor body from the mounting bracket, remove the cover, and back out the terminal screws (figure D). Attach the wires to the appropriate terminals, tighten the screws, replace the cover, and attach the sensor to the mounting bracket.
- Install the motion detectors in an area that is likely to be entered. Make sure the motion detectors aren't near any objects that could interfere in radio transmission.
- Install the siren in an area that will allow your neighbors to hear it clearly.
