Guest Jan Dressler demonstrates how to make a movable mural on cambric cloth. Cambric cloth is a very tightly woven, thin, linen fabric whose smooth surface is perfect for painting. The painted cambric cloth mural may be applied like wallpaper but can be taken down at a later date without hurting the wall's surface. This is a great project for a nursery because the mural can be saved and passed down through the family.

    Materials
    cambric cloth (window shade cloth)
    stencils
    stencil brushes
    spray varnish
    wallpaper paste
    wallpaper hanging tools
    DIF stripper

    Steps

    1. Cut the cambric cloth to the approximate size of the space that you are applying it to.
    2. Lay it on a flat work surface like a sheet of plywood on a couple of saw horses.
    3. Stencil the desired mural. Finish it off with a light spray of polyurethane for protection.
    4. You can hang the piece yourself if you are familiar with paper hanging. Be sure to size the wall so the paper will come down easier.
    5. Note: Rather than doing it yourself, you may prefer to hire a professional wallpaper hanger. Just be sure to tell him you want to be able to remove the mural easily.
    6. When it comes time to remove the mural, you can dampen the cloth to soften the paste. If you need to apply a stripper, DIF makes a good stripper that has worked well for many people. Just take your time and it will come down.
    7. Dry the paper, store it, and use it again or save it for your descendents.
