Guest Candace Kling transforms fabric into showy flowers for hats and party dresses. She folds, stitches, and creates layer upon layer until a beautiful flower emerges.

    Materials
1/3 yard of fabric, preferably silk, in colors mimicking those of actual flowers
    eight-inch square of lace
    ribbon
    crinoline

    Steps

    1. Cut 16 squares of fabric: four, two-inch squares; four, four-inch squares, four, six-inch squares; four, eight-inch squares.
    2. Fold each square on the diagonal and pin the point (figure A).
    3. Place four squares of equal size in front of you as though they were the corners in a picture album (figure B).
    4. Move the upper right triangle over to rest on the upper left one. Pin the top. It looks like "Dutchman's pants."
    5. Move the "pants" down to rest on the lower left triangle. Pin the left edge.
    6. Move the square over to cover the lower right triangle. Pin the bottom. The two right sides of the square should be loose.
    7. Bring the lower tail up, and drop the upper one down to interlock the square. Pin right edge.
    8. Stitch around entire edge of square, leaving a five-inch tail of thread (figure C).
    9. Repeat this process for all sets of squares.
    10. Draw in the gathers on all four squares (figure D).
    11. Attach to crinoline, beginning with the largest square.
    12. Leave a two-inch hole as you draw down the gathers. Stitch in place (figure E).
    13. Place a six-inch square inside the eight-inch square, leaving a smaller hole.
    14. Repeat with the other sets of squares.
    15. Trim excess crinoline.
    16. Make a prairie point (as in quilting). Stitch along the raw edge.
    17. Draw in gathers and knot to make the leaf.
    18. Tuck leaf under bloom.
