    Figure C

    Project designed by Barbara DiClemente.

    Materials:

    sandpaper
    wooden trunk box
    white acrylic paint
    assorted paintbrushes - chip brush
    green glaze
    black glaze
    pouncer brush
    chamois
sea sponges in a variety of sizes
    newspaper
    cotton swabs or toothpick
    clear gloss acrylic sealer

    Steps:

    1. Lightly sand the box.
    2. Apply two base coats of white paint. Let the first coat dry for five hours, then let the second coat dry overnight.
    3. Dip a paintbrush into the green glaze then apply the glaze onto the box using a diagonal flowing motion. Leave sections of white showing (figure A).
    4. Dip a brush into the black glaze, and fill in the white area. Only fill one section of the box at a time.
    5. Using the pouncer brush, lightly blend the two colors together by pouncing in a diagonal motion (figure B).
    6. Cut the chamois into several irregularly-shaped strips then soak the strips in water. Wring out the strips so that they are just moist.
    7. Using the damp chamois, brush gently through the glaze on the box (figure C). Lift the chamois off the box then do two more sections so that the white shows through.
    8. Use the moistened sponge to imprint lightly in the areas where the glaze is still green. This will start to create a marble background.
    9. Crumple a small square of newspaper tightly, and imprint the newspaper into the areas surrounding the white paint.
    10. Using another piece of moist chamois, start to shape the white areas using a squiggling motion. Try to make the shapes look different.
    11. When the glaze has started to set, break a cotton swab in half. Take the broken part and squiggle it into the glaze to form connecting veins.
    12. Using the pouncer brush again, continue to shape the green areas. Go back and clean up with the chamois if necessary.
    13. Dip a cotton swab in water and lightly clean out and define the white areas.
    14. Let the box dry overnight.
    15. To finish, apply three coats of clear gloss acrylic sealer.
