    Project designed by Jan Dressler.

    Equestrian mural

    Materials:

    acrylic paints
graining tool - Dressler Stencil Company
    glazing liquid or water-based varnish
    two, three-inch flat paintbrushes
stencils - Way Out West - The Old West - Dressler Stencil Company

    Steps:

    1. Paint the background for the mural with off-white colored paint.

    2. Position the box stall door stencil on the wall at the desired height to establish lines that form the boards. Stencil along the cracked areas with grey-colored paint.

    3. To add a wood grain look (figure A), mix pale grey acrylic paint with glazing liquid or water-based varnish in a ratio of one-part paint to three-parts varnish. Use a broad paintbrush to stroke the glaze onto the wall (figure B). Paint one board at a time, and use a graining tool (figure C) to drag straight down through the glaze, slightly rocking the tool. Soften the grain by stroking it with a dry brush.

    4. Position the horse stencil on top of the black painted area and paint a light-colored base coat of paint within the stencil.

    5. Paint the inside of the barn area with black paint and let it dry. Add another coat if desired.

    6. Stencil the horse (figure D) as well as other foreground elements such as a saddle on a stand, a bridle hanging from the post, a barrel, trophy and ribbon. Using cream-colored paint, add shadows around the foreground elements to create a life-like look (figures E and F).
