    Figure G

    Project designed by Tracey McBride.

    Materials:

    plain picture frame
cardboard to fit inside picture frame
    water putty
    water
    two disposable containers
thin putty knife or disposable knife
    purchased or homemade applique
    1/4- to 1/8-inch wide paintbrush
small container of water to hold brushes
    old plastic or newspaper
    candy mold
    modeling clay

    Steps:

    1. Press an applique or other embellishment of choice into smoothed modeling clay to impress a design (figure A).

    2. Add water to the water putty powder and stir. Pour the liquid into the impression in the clay (figure B). Let dry.

    3. Remove the water putty ornament from the clay (figure C). Repeat to make as many ornaments as desired (figures D and E).

    4. Remove the glass from the picture frame and place a piece of cardboard in its place (figure F).

    5. Mix a bowl of water putty to a frosting-like consistency. Apply the putty with a putty knife to the surface of the frame.

    6. Spread water putty onto the back of a dry ornament and place it onto the frame as desired.

    7. Apply water putty to the open areas around the ornament and spread to blend (figure G).

    Tips:

To extend the liquidity of mixed water putty, add about a tablespoon of vinegar or milk (allow for about 15 percent more drying time).

Tint the water putty a different color as you mix it by adding small amounts of powdered pigment when mixing.
