Kathryn Arnett's art career began with her fascination with junkyards, where she was inspired by pieces of machinery, scrap metal and wood. Since then, she has moved to New Orleans and creates functional art from recycled materials. She now recycles over three tons a month. Arnett shows us how to create one of her whimsical birdhouses. These colorful birdhouses are made of reclaimed cypress and metal. Throughout the process, Kathryn uses tools such as nail guns, plasma cutters and other industrial equipment to achieve the end result. She begins by constructing the basic form of the birdhouse with cypress. Once painted, she turns to the embellishments made of metal. Flowers that decorate the front of the birdhouse are cut out of scrap metal, textured and painted. Rolled corrugated metal is used for the roof. A weathervane can be added as well as numerous other embellishments to make them some of the most unique birdhouses you'll ever see.
