Designed by Pat Desantis. Make your own pet a comfy bed with a custom cover, which can easily be removed and washed. Personalize it with any type of trimming or ribbon and Iron on decoration. Materials: 24" square, 3" thick piece of upholstery foam Poly Quilt batting (90" x 120") 2-1/4 yards 54" wide plastic tablecloth fabric 2 yards 60" wide fleece or other fabric 1-1/2 yards hook-and-loop tape about 15 yards trim & ribbon long doll-making needle 2 yards thin nylon cord hot glue gun & glue sticks sewing needle & thread or sewing machine masking tape Steps: 1. Cut a 24" x 81" piece from plastic tablecloth fabric. Cut another piece 30" x 64". 2. Center the foam over the 30-inch piece of fabric. Fold up lengthwise and glue in place firmly (figure A). HINT: you can use hot glue directly on the foam; being rubber, it wont melt (figure B). 3. Fold up side pieces (similar to wrapping a package) and glue in place firmly (figure C). 4. Sew a long seam in the second piece of tablecloth fabric, right sides together. Turn and set aside. 5. Cut a piece of batting 78 inches long. Spread it out and roll it up (lengthwise) and tape it by wrapping masking tape firmly around it at 18-inch intervals (figure D). 6. Insert batting roll into long piece of fabric, creating "bolster" (figure E). 7. As the fabric is longer, stuff the excess into the center of the roll of batting (figure F). 8. Using the long needle and cord, attach the bolster to the bed (figure G) on three sides, leaving the front open, by inserting the needle through the bed and around the bolster (figure H). 9. To make the cover: Fold the piece of fabric in half lengthwise. Cut it into a shape, straight in the front (the full width) and back and rounded at the two sides. 10. Decorate by fusing or stitching strips of trim and ribbon or decorations of choice to the fabric (figure I). Tip: Try cutting the pets name from an iron-on mending fabric and apply it. You can also cut decorative shapes of toys, bones, etc., and iron in place. 11. Sew the two rounded sides of the trimmed fabric (right sides together) and turn. 12. Separate the hook-and-loop tape, pin in place at each side of bag opening, and sew (figure J). 13. Slip cover over bed and close with hook-and-loop tape (figure K). 14. The cover will be loose. Fit it tightly to the front and blouse and tuck around the bolster at the sides and back (figure L). Tack or tie any excess at the back of bed.
