Polymer Clay Puff Bead Bracelet

texture plate
pasta machine (Atlas)
water spray bottle
Armorall as a mold release
sharp tissue blade
scrap clay
aluminum paint palette
1-1/4" circle cutter
150-grit dry wall sanding screen
rubber fingers
super-strength glue
13" Soft-flex beading wire
wire cutters
chain nose pliers
toggle clasp
2 crimp beads
pin vice
small drill bit
small beads, # 8 seed beads or E beads
2" sewing needle (eye large enough for the Soft-flex) (optional)

Steps:

1. To make the 12 molds for the puff beads: Roll scrap clay to a # 1 thickness on the pasta machine.

2. With the 1-1/4-inch circle cutter, cut two circles for each mold (figure A).

3. Roll the two circles together to form a ball.

4. Spray the aluminum paint palette with Armorall. Press a ball of clay into each well in the palette (figure B).

5. Bake for an hour according to manufacturer's instructions. Pop the clay out of the palette and let cool.

6. To create a Mokume gane sheet: Roll three contrasting colors of conditioned Kato Polyclay on the #1 setting of the pasta machine. Cut a 3-inch square of each color. Stack the three squares together (figure C) and run through the pasta machine on a #1 thickness.

7. Cut that sheet in half. Stack the two halves and run through the pasta machine on # 1 again. Cut the sheet in half again, stack, and run through on #1 (figure D).

8. Spray the texture plate with water, place the clay sheet on the texture sheet, and run both together through the pasta machine on a #1 setting (figure E).

9. With a sharp tissue blade, shave off the raised areas of clay (figure F).

10. Create a backing sheet of clay run through the pasta machine on a #3 setting. Put the shavings onto this sheet (figure G).

11. Put these together through the pasta machine, beginning on a #1 thickness, turn a quarter turn and put through on #2; turn quarter turn and put through on #3 (figure H). The sheet should be very smooth and ready to cut circles for the beads.

12. To make the puff beads: Using the 1-1/4-inch circle cutter, cut out 12 circles from the Mokume gane sheet.

13. Spray Armorall on the puff bead molds. Fit one circle of clay over each of the 12 molds, easing the clay to fit the mold (figure I).

14. Bake the clay circles on the molds for 45 minutes according to manufacturer's instructions.

15. Separate the clay from the mold while it is still warm, but let it cool on the mold.

16. Sand each half of the bead edges on the dry wall screen so they are flat (figure J).

17. Use super glue to stick the halves together to make one puff bead (figure K).

18. Drill two holes in each bead for stringing. String six puff beads and seed beads as needed. The bracelet should be about 9 inches long, including the clasp, for wrists that are 6-1/2 to 7-1/2 inches around.

19. Put one half of the toggle clasp on each end and use crimp beads to secure it (figure L).
