When you're watching a video, the sounds you hear--be they the rhythmic pounding of the sea or a musical score composed specifically to create a mood--help bring it alive. Sound is the unseen element that ties everything together in a well-produced program. Hollywood has long known that the sounds we hear affect our emotions when we're watching a movie. That's why there are Academy Awards® not just for a movie's music but also for sound editing and sound recording. The good news is that new technology has made Tinseltown's techniques, if not its expertise, accessible to the amateur everywhere. Today we're introducing you to powerful new software that allows you to fine-tune the sound in your home movie with the click of a mouse. Even more important, however, we're going to share with you some of the tools used by professionals to create a powerful soundtrack. Equipment needed includes a computer, video-editing software (which on average can cost from $50 to $900) and a lavaliere/lapel microphone, which provides higher-quality sound than the microphone built into the camera.
