Project by Joy Flanigan from Overland Park, Kan. Joy comes from a family of crafters and artists, so it is no surprise that she is carrying on the family tradition. Her latest passion is making embossed metal photo frames with hand-painted accents. It is a craft with Latin influences and one that fascinates Joy so that she is constantly researching and studying so she can apply every aspect of the process. Materials: sheet metal soft cloth metal cutters embossing tools glass paint unfinished wood photo frame hot glue gun and glue sticks felt or leather Steps: 1. Determine the appropriate gauge metal for the project. Roll out the metal and smooth out on a soft surface. Rub the metal with a soft cloth like felt to prime it. 2. Cut the metal to size of desired project. For picture frame, create a template drawing on the metal to allow for photo opening in center and a 1/2-inch allowance on the sides. Cut out the center opening. 3. Lay out the design. Draw the design on the metal using an embossing tool, including "wells." 4. Fill the "wells" with glass paint. Let the paint dry 5. Mold the completed metal design to an unfinished wood frame using hot glue or tape. 6. Finish the back of the frame using felt or leather to give the frame a finished look.
