Host Tips
- Begin your project with sketches and develop a full scale drawing. From the drawing create a rough mockup and from the mockup develop a working prototype.
- Either bring “the wood to the tool” (run a board thru the planer) or if the wood is too big, bring “the tool to the wood.” To plane a large slab set a pair of router rails (two pieces of tube steel) on either side of the slab and attach a plywood base to the router long enough to span the rails .This will allow you to use the router as a planer or a milling machine.
- Give yourself permission to explore your own creativity. Schedule some time to be in the shop and play around with new ideas to see what might unfold.
- Take a woodworking class. Exposing yourself to new information can open doors that you may have never known existed.
Master woodworker David Marks, host of Wood Works, provides tips on woodworking techniques in columns distributed by Scripps Howard News Service. We've put together a list of them for you.
