The panel cluster on some Duesenbergs included, among other things, an altimeter. In the 1920s and '30s, when aviation was enjoying its initial popularity, luxury car owners were fascinated by the trappings of air travel. Though there's no real reason for a car to have an altimeter, drivers might at least enjoy knowing the altitude when driving in a mountainous area.
