    To fertilize a fruit tree, toss a thin circle of pelletized fertilizer around the tree's "drip line," which is the part of the soil below the outer rim of leaves (figure A). Then work the fertilizer into the soil with a trowel, add a layer of organic compost, and mulch -- making sure you keep the compost and mulch away from the base of the tree.
