    To protect outdoor bonsai during cold weather, choose a container that's several sizes larger than the bonsai pot and tree. The large container should have ample drainage holes in the bottom. Add a layer of peat moss to the bottom of the large container, and then put the entire bonsai -- pot and tree -- inside (figure A). Bury the bonsai container with more peat moss, up to the tree trunk. In spring, take the bonsai back out, clean up pot and tree, and you're ready for another growing season.
